پیچ و مهره‌ها ابزارآلاتی کاربردی هستند که برای ایجاد اتصالات موقت در صنایع مختلف و بسیاری از کاربردهای خانگی استفاده می‌شوند. پیچ و مهره‌ها در ظاهر ابزارهایی ساده هستند، اما با توجه به اهمیت آن‌ها در کاربرد و نقش‌های مهمی که در ایجاد اتصالات به عهده دارند، باید بر اساس استانداردهای تعریف شده تولید شوند. این استانداردها ترکیب شیمیایی، روش‌ها و فرایندهای تولید، نحوه و شرایط کنترل کیفیت و تست‌های انجام شده بر روی پیچ و مهره‌ها و سایزبندی‌های مشخصی را برای انواع مختلف پیچ و مهره تعریف می‌کنند و آن‌ها را در قالب دستورالعمل‌هایی برای اجرا در اختیار تولیدکنندگان پیچ و مهره قرار می‌دهند.

این استانداردها بسیار دقیق و مهندسی شده تعریف شده‌اند و نتیجه سال‌ها تلاش و تحقیق محققان و مهندسان است. تولیدکنندگان این محصولات در روند تولید فراورده‌های خود، ملزم به رعایت این استانداردها هستند. پرکاربردترین استانداردهایی که در زمینه‌های ذکر شده برای پیچ و مهره‌ها تعریف شده‌اند، استانداردهای DIN, ISO، BS و ASTM هستند.
